It's a Twinderful Life

Looking For the Silver Lining in All of Life's Clouds

The Beast and The Beauty

on September 10, 2012

Welcome to Monday! Seeing as today is the last Monday we will spend in our little condo (tear) it felt like a good day to finally tackle the post about the remodeling we did to get it ready to put on the market. As I went back to find the “before” pics I was reminded just how big of a difference a new floor and some paint can make. I don’t know how you all are, but I get some sick pleasure from looking at “before” and “after pics – they appeal to the perfectionist in me. I hope that you enjoy the eye candy as much as I do!

Note: We were trying to make the decorating something that would be universally appealing to the buyer, so this isn’t exactly how I would have decorated if we were going to be here longer, but close. Nonetheless, I still think it looks pretty fantastic.

Note 2: Please keep in mind that the before pics were in the middle of the remodel, hence the craziness and overall lack of order (shudder).

There you have it, the fruits of our remodeling labors. I’m going to miss this place and all of the fun memories that were made there. But, I’m striving to look on the bright side and dwell on the fact that we’ll make new memories wherever the wind may blow us. We’re putting an offer on a house today so we’ll see what happens. We’ll keep you posted fo’ sho’!

In conclusion here are some lessons that we learned:

  • Remodeling a 700 square foot condo is very difficult while living in it (you don’t even know unless you’ve been there and I don’t necessarily recommend it).
  • Paint and new flooring is a very inexpensive way to make a huge difference in changing the look and feel of a space.
  • Before you start painting, make sure you have all of your supplies first so that you don’t have to make multiple trips to the store (I wonder how much time/gas we wasted going to and from Lowes).
  • Less is more when it comes to accessorizing your room (I’m starting to lean more towards minimalist decor).
  • I am and will forever be obsessed with wood laminate flooring and neutral walls.
  • We should have remodeled sooner so that we could have enjoyed it longer. We won’t make this mistake again. Before we move into our new place we’re going to try to get as much of this done as possible so that we can enjoy it from Day 1.

Have a fantastic beginning to your week!

LOVE it!!! You guys did some beautiful work. I love the neutral walls and the wood flooring as well. Good luck in your move. It will be fun to see where you are able to settle.

I, too, very much enjoy before and after pics – I think it not only shows you what you can do, but what NOT to do. Ever.
Love the floors! After living in my mom’s house as her caregiver (her health was much worse for far longer than she let on) I hope I never have to live with carpet again! I like how your floor is darker colored around the edges of the strips. Do you have a product list somewhere?
I also like the mix of finishes in the dining room. Gives it a fresh, casual feel. Makes me want to go paint the built-in hutch here. And maybe the table and chairs…It’s addicting – hard to stop once you’ve gotten that paint brush in your hand!

Hi Terrie! Thanks for your kind words! And kudos to you for taking care of your mom like that.

We are OBSESSED with those floors and will most likely put them in our future home. They are beautiful, easy to clean, and they hide the fact that your floor may not be glisteningly clean every second of the day. We bought them at Lumber Liquidators here in Salt Lake City during their Spring sale (the week after Easter) for an AMAZING price – $1.89/sq. ft. marked down from $2.49/sq. ft. It’s called St. James 12mm Vintner’s Reserve. Here’s is the link:

The kitchen cabinets, baseboards, and trim are all painted in Valspar Hi-Def Polar White and I can’t remember the name of the color we used on the walls, but I’ll get back to you.

I say get that paint brush and tackle that built-in hutch and the table and chairs! And thanks for stopping by!

Where did you get your white table? It’s great – the whole condo looks wonderful!!

    • Brittany says:

Thanks Lynsday! I got the table and chairs from two separate yard sales and then spray painted them white. The table was a light oak and the chairs were varying shades of blue, green, and white. Needless to say, they looked MUCH better after the makeover. Thanks for stopping by!

I did a whole house make-over for my sister and her husband so they could sell their house. It was fantastic (so everyone said!) after I finished it. The best comment though was their married daughter who said “Gosh, it’s so great looking! Too bad they couldn’t have lived in it longer this way.” Yup! It was on the market one day and there was even a bidding war!

Staging, neutral colors and “less is more” is a great thing! Your condo looks terrrrrriffffic! Very nice use of colors.

What do you think?
